Why Knit Is Harder Than It Looks
Woven fabric is a fixed grid. Knit is a series of interlocking loops that open and close in every direction, which is what makes a beanie fit any head and also what makes it a demanding surface to stitch.
When a needle lays dense thread into knit, it pins those loops in place. The surrounding fabric, still free to move, draws inward toward the pinned area. Which Logos Translate Well
Bold wordmarks, simple icons, and outlined shapes all work. Anything with clean edges and reasonable line weight will read on knit.
What does not translate is fine detail. Thread has a minimum practical line width, and below it strokes close up or break. On knit that threshold is higher than on woven fabric, because the surface texture itself is coarser. A logo that just barely holds on a cap front will lose definition here.
Gradients cannot be reproduced at all. Thread is a solid color, so gradients have to be simplified into flat steps or dropped. On a small beanie mark, dropping them is almost always the better call.

Blanks That Take Embroidery Well

Backing is the material placed behind the fabric during stitching. Knit needs a backing that holds the loops still without stiffening the finished cuff, which is a balance a shop makes by judgement rather than formula.
You will not see either on a proof, which is why asking whether a shop digitizes in-house matters. A file built elsewhere without knowledge of the blank will make both choices generically.
Embroidery Against the Alternatives
Printed decoration on knit fails quickly. The surface flexes constantly and a printed layer cracks along the flex lines within a season, usually starting at the edges of the design.
Patches are a genuine alternative when a logo has detail thread cannot hold. A woven patch sewn to the cuff reproduces fine lines the way a printed patch would while surviving washing the way stitching does. The trade is a visible patch edge, which looks like a design choice on some brands and as an intrusion on others.

Direct embroidery remains the default because it looks integral rather than applied, and because thread laid into the loops moves with them instead of sitting on top.
A digitized knit file stays on record, so reorders run from the identical map. Only blank dye lot can vary between batches.
