Faux fur is worth a specific note. It changes the price point and the perception considerably, and it reads as a retail product in a way a yarn pom does not. For a merchandise line it is often worth the difference; for a crew program it usually is not.
Detachable poms solve a real problem on mixed programs. Some people want the pom and some remove it immediately, and a snap attachment covers both without splitting the order.
The Body Underneath
The pom is the finish; the knit is the hat. Three decisions carry the weight.
- Fiber. Acrylic is the workhorse — warm, colorfast, takes embroidery well, and the right call for most orders. Merino is warmer per gram and far softer, at a higher cost. Fleece-lined acrylic is the biggest warmth upgrade available and the most requested feature for outdoor crews.

- Cuff. Almost all pom beanies are cuffed, and the fold doubles the fabric across the ears where most heat is lost. It is also the best logo surface on the hat.
Where the Logo Goes
- The cuff fold is the answer in nearly every case. Two layers of fabric give a flat, stable surface that holds a design without distorting when the hat stretches over a head. It is where most embroidered beanies carry their branding for exactly this reason.
- Direct embroidery works on fine and medium rib knits. Keep designs compact and avoid thin lettering — anything under about a quarter inch tall sinks into the knit texture.
- Woven and leather patches give a flat canvas on top of the knit, which holds fine detail that thread cannot. On chunky and cable knits this is the reliable option rather than a stylistic one.
- What does not work. The crown near the pom, where the fabric gathers and curves in two directions, and anything on the pom itself.

Sizing

Care
Pom beanies need slightly more care than a plain knit, because the pom is the vulnerable part.
- Wash cold on a gentle cycle, or by hand for merino and wool blends.
- Turn the beanie inside out to protect embroidery and patch edges.
- Never tumble dry. Heat shrinks acrylic, felts wool and mats a faux fur pom permanently.
- Lay flat to dry rather than hanging, so the crown does not stretch under its own weight.
- On a faux fur pom, shake it out while damp and let the fibers separate as it dries.
- Store folded rather than stuffed. Compressed knit takes a set and holds it.
