A hat grommet is a metal ring set through the fabric of a cap to reinforce a hole, most often a ventilation vent but also used for drawcords, chin cord anchors and patch mounting. Two metal pieces are pressed together through the fabric from both sides, clamping it and finishing the hole with a hard, permanent edge. It's the metal alternative to a stitched eyelet.

Grommet vs Eyelet
The words get used interchangeably and there is a real distinction worth keeping.
An eyelet is the hole itself, and on most caps it is finished with dense satin stitching in the panel color. No hardware is involved. Our guide to hat eyelets covers the stitched version, which is the default on the vast majority of caps.

A grommet is a metal ring set into a hole to reinforce it. Every grommet creates an eyelet, but most eyelets are not grommets. When someone says a cap has metal eyelets, they mean grommets.

Grommets are for holes under load. Stitched eyelets are for holes that only need to breathe.

Where Grommets Turn Up on Headwear
- Ventilation holes. On canvas caps, boonies and outdoor styles where the industrial look is wanted.
- Drawcord exits. Where an adjustment cord passes through the crown or brim, the hole is under repeated tension and needs reinforcing.
- Chin cord anchors. On safari hats and boonies, the cord attaches through grommets on each side.
- Bucket hat side vents. Common, and part of the style's utilitarian character.
- Patch mounting. Occasionally used at patch corners on tactical and workwear blanks.
What they are not used for is standard six-panel ball cap ventilation. On a fitted cap or a dad hat the eyelets are stitched, and a grommet there would read as odd rather than rugged.
The Corrosion Problem
This is the practical reason to think carefully before specifying grommets.
Most hat grommets are brass, nickel-plated brass or aluminum. In salt air, or under sustained contact with sweat, plated hardware corrodes at the edges. The corrosion then stains the fabric around the ring, usually as a green or brown halo that does not wash out. On a marine, fishing or coastal program that shows up within a season.
Solid brass and stainless versions resist it far better and cost more. If a program genuinely needs metal hardware near salt water, specify the material rather than accepting whatever the blank comes with. For everything else, stitched eyelets sidestep the problem entirely.
Plated grommets corrode in salt air and stain the fabric around them. For marine, fishing and coastal programs, specify solid brass or stainless, or use stitched eyelets instead.
Grommet Sizing and Placement
Grommets come in standard sizes and the choice affects both function and how the hat reads.

- Small, around a quarter inch. Subtle, minimal airflow, reads as a finished detail rather than a feature. Common on fashion-oriented styles.
- Medium, around three eighths. The practical middle. Visible, functional, and used on most outdoor and field styles.
- Large, half an inch and up. Strongly utilitarian and genuinely effective at moving air. Reads technical or military.
Placement matters as much as size. Grommets set high in the crown vent better than low ones, since heat rises — a grommet near the sweatband line does less than one near the crown top. Two per side is typical; four is common on expedition styles.
One structural note. A grommet requires a hole punched through the fabric, so it needs enough material around it to hold. Placing one close to a seam or a panel edge risks tearing, which is why blanks position them centrally within a panel rather than wherever a designer might prefer.
Grommets and Decoration
Two practical constraints.
They cannot be hooped over. An embroidery hoop needs a flat surface, and a raised metal ring is not one. Artwork has to clear any grommet by a comfortable margin, which on a side panel usually means placing the mark forward and low.
They set a hard boundary on the panel. Unlike a stitched eyelet, which a design can technically encroach on, a grommet is a physical obstruction. Treat it as a wall.

On a cap with front grommets — rare, but it happens on canvas and workwear blanks — check the usable front height carefully before setting up artwork. The same principle applies across custom hats with logo on any blank with hardware near the decoration area.
- Plated grommets on a marine program. They corrode and stain, and the hat looks worn out well before it is.
- Designing artwork that runs to a grommet. The hoop cannot sit flat over metal. Leave clearance.
- Assuming grommets mean better ventilation. A metal ring vents no better than a stitched hole of the same size.
- Retrofitting grommets onto a finished cap. Setting them through a structured panel can damage the backing.
Does a Grommet Ventilate Better?
No. Airflow depends on the size of the hole, not on how the edge is finished. A quarter-inch grommet and a quarter-inch stitched eyelet move the same amount of air.
Where grommets do help is durability under load. A drawcord pulling repeatedly through a stitched hole will eventually tear the fabric; through a grommet it will not. That is the actual case for metal, and it is a good one where it applies. How Grommets Are Set
A hole is punched through the fabric, then two metal pieces — a barrel with a flange on one side and a washer on the other — are pressed together with a hand press or a machine die. The barrel rolls outward as it is pressed, locking the washer against the fabric permanently.
Three things distinguish a well-set grommet from a poorly set one. The roll should be even all the way around, with no cracks or flat spots in the metal. The fabric should be clamped firmly with no gap between the two pieces. And the punched hole should be slightly smaller than the barrel, so the fabric is under light compression rather than floating loose.
A badly set grommet spins in the fabric. If you can turn it with a fingertip, the fabric has torn or the roll did not close, and it will pull out within a season of use. It is a five-second check worth doing on any sample.
What We Tell Customers Who Ask
Specify grommets when a hole is under tension — drawcords, chin cords, anything that pulls. For ventilation alone, stitched eyelets do the same job with no corrosion risk and no decoration constraint.
Grommets add a small amount per hat, and solid brass or stainless adds more. On a coastal program that upgrade is worth it; on an inland one, stitched eyelets save the money entirely.
Canvas and ripstop hold a grommet well because the weave is tight and stable. On a loose or soft knit the ring can work its way loose over time, which is why you rarely see grommets on unstructured caps.

Rinse metal hardware with fresh water after exposure to salt. It is the single habit that keeps grommets from staining the fabric around them.
