What Is a Hat Eyelet? Ventilation, Types and Why It Matters
Eyelets are the smallest feature on a cap and the one most often removed to save a few cents. We notice when they're missing, and so will you the first time you wear the hat in July.
A hat eyelet is a small ventilation hole in the crown of a cap, usually one per panel, finished either with stitching or with a metal grommet. They let warm air escape from the top of the crown, which is where it collects. On a solid-back cap the eyelets are the only ventilation the hat has, which makes them far more important than their size suggests.

What Eyelets Do
Warm air rises inside a cap and collects at the top of the crown. Without an escape route it stays there and the hat gets uncomfortable. Eyelets give it somewhere to go, and cooler air draws in around the brim to replace it.
It is a modest effect on any single hole, and a meaningful one across six. On a mesh-back trucker the eyelets matter less, because the mesh is doing most of the work. On a solid-back cap — a dad hat, a fitted cap, a camp cap — they are the entire ventilation system, and a blank that omits them to cut cost is noticeably hotter.

Stitched eyelets are the default. Metal is a styling choice. No eyelets at all is a cost decision.
Stitched vs Metal
Stitched eyelets are made by punching the fabric and finishing the edge with dense satin stitching, usually in the panel color so they disappear, occasionally in a contrast color as a design detail. They cannot pull out, cannot corrode, and add nothing to the weight of the hat.
Metal grommets are set rings, and they read differently — more utilitarian, more workwear. They are common on canvas caps, outdoor styles and anything aiming at a rugged look. The trade is that metal can corrode in salt air and can catch on things, so for marine programs stitched is usually the safer specification.
For anything worn near salt water, specify stitched eyelets rather than metal. Grommets on marine caps corrode and stain the fabric around them within a season.
Do Eyelets Actually Ventilate?
Worth an honest answer, because the effect is smaller than the feature suggests.
Six small holes in a crown provide limited airflow on their own. Air needs somewhere to enter and somewhere to leave, and eyelets alone create modest convection rather than genuine circulation. On a solid-back cap in still Florida air, the difference between six eyelets and none is real but not dramatic.
What makes a measurable difference is a larger open area — a mesh back, mesh side panels, or laser perforation across the crown. Those move air rather than letting a little escape.
Where eyelets do earn their place is moisture. They give sweat vapour a path out of the crown, which helps the interior dry between wears and reduces the stale smell that closed caps develop.
The practical guidance is not to specify eyelets and consider the ventilation question answered. If heat is the actual problem, the back panels are where to solve it.
How Eyelets Affect Your Logo
This is the practical reason to care about them at design time.
Eyelets sit high on the panel, near the crown seam. On a standard six-panel cap the front eyelets fall directly above the front panel decoration area, which sets an upper limit on how tall a logo can be. Push artwork too high and it runs into the eyelet, which looks like an error and cannot be hooped cleanly.
On most structured caps the usable front area sits below the eyelet line, giving you roughly two to two and a quarter inches of height. That is the number worth designing to. It applies across custom hats with logo on virtually every six-panel blank.
Side panel decoration has the same constraint. A small mark on a side panel needs to clear its eyelet, which usually means placing it forward and low rather than centered on the panel.
Artwork that runs into an eyelet cannot be stitched cleanly. Keep front panel designs below the eyelet line, which on most caps means about two and a quarter inches of usable height.
Eyelets and Other Ventilation
Caps ventilate in four ways, and eyelets are only one of them.
- Eyelets. Small, at the top of the crown. Modest airflow, present on almost everything.
- Mesh panels. Large open areas. The most airflow available in headwear.
- Laser perforation. Hundreds of tiny sealed holes across a panel. Vents well and looks solid at distance.
- Fabric. An open-weave or performance shell breathes on its own, though far less than any hole does.

- Designing artwork that hits the eyelet line. It cannot be hooped properly and it reads as a mistake.
- Metal grommets on marine caps. They corrode and stain the panel around them.
- Choosing an eyelet-free blank for summer. On a solid-back cap that removes the only ventilation the hat has.
- Assuming eyelets equal a cool hat. Six small holes help. They do not replace mesh or a wicking band.
Construction Notes
On a well-made cap, stitched eyelets are dense enough that the fabric edge is fully enclosed and cannot fray. On cheaper blanks the stitching is thin, and the hole opens up over a season of wear. Holding a sample and looking closely at the eyelet stitching is one of the fastest quality checks available on a cap.

Check the eyelet stitching on any sample before a large run. Thin, sparse stitching around the hole is the clearest sign of a cheap blank, and it is visible in ten seconds.
Eyelets cost almost nothing to include, which means a blank without them was built to a price. That usually shows up elsewhere in the hat too, most often in the sweatband.
Do not push anything through an eyelet to clean it. The stitched edge is what keeps the hole from opening up, and disturbing it starts a fray that spreads.
