How Quilting Works
A quilted panel is a sandwich. An outer shell fabric, a layer of batting, and a backing or lining. Stitching through all three at intervals holds the batting in place and stops it shifting or bunching.
The batting is what insulates, and it does so by holding still air within its loft. The stitching compresses the sandwich along each line, which is why the fabric puffs between the stitch lines and flattens along them.
That produces the characteristic quilted appearance, and it also explains the trade: more stitch lines means better batting stability and less loft, so a densely quilted panel is more durable and less warm than a loosely quilted one of the same materials.
