A fitted cap size is a fixed hat size, expressed in fractions like 7 1/4 or in a small-to-large band, that corresponds to a specific head circumference with no adjustment. Sizes run from roughly 6 3/4 to 8 for adults, which maps to about 21 1/4 to 25 1/8 inches of head circumference. There's no strap and no snap, so your number has to be right.

How to Measure for a Fitted Cap
- Use a soft tailor's tape. No tape, use string and measure the string against a ruler afterward.
- Position it about half an inch above the eyebrows and ears — where the cap actually sits, not at the widest point of the skull.
- Run it around the fullest part of the back of the head.
- Snug, not tight. One finger should slide underneath.
- Measure over your hair as you normally wear it. Thick or tied-back hair changes the number.
If your measurement falls between two sizes, size up. A fitted cap that is slightly loose sits on the head; one that is slightly tight leaves a line on the forehead within an hour and gets abandoned.
Measure at the end of the day rather than first thing. Hair sits differently once it has been out in the world, and you get a number closer to how the cap will actually be worn.

A fitted size is not a universal measurement, and two caps labeled 7 1/4 from different manufacturers can fit noticeably differently.
Three things cause it. Sweatband thickness takes up internal circumference, so a padded band effectively shrinks the cap. Crown construction affects how the cap sits — a deeper crown feels looser at the same circumference because it sits further down. And fabric behavior matters, since wool blends give slightly under tension where a stiff cotton does not.
The practical consequences for an order are two. First, someone who knows their size in one brand should still check the manufacturer's chart rather than assuming it transfers. Why Two Caps in the Same Size Fit Differently
Three reasons, all of them physical.
- Sweatband thickness. A thick or padded band takes up internal circumference. Same nominal size, less room inside.
- Crown height and panel count. A taller crown holds more air above the head and can feel roomier at the same measurement.
- Structure. A rigid buckram-backed crown does not give. A softer one relaxes slightly to the head over a few wears.

A fitted cap that feels tight will not break in enough to fix it. The crown may relax a fraction, but the sweatband and the seam structure do not. Size up rather than hoping.
Shrinkage and Fitted Sizing
Fitted caps have no adjustment, which makes them uniquely vulnerable to anything that changes the circumference — and cotton shrinks.
A pure cotton fitted cap can lose enough circumference in a hot wash or a dryer to move it effectively half a size. There is no strap to compensate, so the cap either fits differently or stops fitting.
Two practical responses. Specify a blend or a wool blend rather than pure cotton, since polyester and wool content both limit shrinkage substantially. And make the care instruction explicit if the caps are being sold — a buyer who machine dries a fitted cap has effectively destroyed it, and they will conclude the sizing was wrong rather than the washing.
The same logic applies to stretch-fit caps, where the elastic band can lose recovery with heat and leave the cap permanently loose.
When a Fitted Cap Is Worth It
The clean back panel is the whole appeal. There is no strap interrupting the silhouette, no snap hardware, no adjustment gap. For retail lines, for teams where players are measured anyway, and for individuals who know their size, a custom baseball caps looks better than anything adjustable.
Where it fails is group ordering. Collecting an accurate measurement from thirty people is genuinely hard, and a wrong size on a fitted cap is a wasted hat rather than a slightly loose one.
