Newborn Hat Size Guide: The First Six Weeks
Share
A newborn hat has the shortest useful life of anything we make, and buying one to fit exactly is usually a mistake. We'll say so upfront.
Newborn hats fit about 13 to 14 inches of head circumference, or 33 to 36 centimeters, and are typically outgrown within six weeks. Head circumference grows around two inches in the first three months, which is faster than any later period. For a gift, the 0–3 month band is almost always the better order.
- 13–14 in / 33–36 cm. Preemie sizes run smaller.
- Outgrown in about six weeks. Normal, not a sizing error.
- For gifts, order 0–3 months instead. Newborns outgrow the smallest band in weeks.
- Made in the USA, no minimums. One hat is a real order.
The Sizes
| Size | Inches | Centimeters | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro preemie | 9–11 | 23–28 | Very early birth |
| Preemie | 11–13 | 28–33 | Early birth, first weeks |
| Newborn | 13–14 | 33–36 | Birth to about 6 weeks |
| 0–3 months | 14–16 | 36–41 | 6 weeks to 3 months |
| 3–6 months | 16–17 | 41–43 | 3 to 6 months |
Preemie sizing follows corrected age rather than the birth date, so those bands can last considerably longer.

Buying before a birth? Order 0–3 months rather than newborn. It fits from about six weeks and gets worn for a season, where a newborn hat is often outgrown before it is opened.
Why Newborn Hats Matter
Beyond appearance, there is a practical reason hospitals put hats on newborns immediately.
A newborn's head is large relative to their body and poorly insulated, so it is a significant route of heat loss. Newborns also regulate their own temperature less effectively than older babies. A hat in the first hours and days genuinely helps maintain body temperature.
That is why hospital hats exist and why the newborn band, short-lived as it is, is a real product rather than a novelty.
Two practical points follow. Softness and light weight matter more than appearance in this band. And for hospital and welcome programs, plain or lightly marked hats in the smallest sizes are usually the right specification, with branded pieces reserved for larger sizes that go home.

What to Buy Before a Birth
- 0–3 months as the default gift size. It fits soon after birth and lasts.
- One newborn hat at most if the hat is for photographs in the first weeks.
- 3–6 months for anything seasonal, since a summer hat gifted in winter needs to fit in summer.
- Soft knit rather than woven. Stretch extends the fit window and conforms to an irregular head shape.
The seasonal point catches people out on gifts. A warm knit bought for a baby due in spring will be outgrown well before the following winter, so sizing up two bands is sensible for anything cold-weather.
Head Shape in the First Weeks
Newborn heads are not uniformly round. Molding from birth is common and resolves over the first weeks, and positional flattening can develop later.
That is a strong argument for knits over woven caps at this age. A stretchy knit conforms to whatever shape is there; a structured cap assumes a shape that may not exist yet.
It also means fit should be judged by where the hat sits rather than by whether it goes on. It should cover the ears fully without pressing and sit close to the brow without slipping over the eyes.
Judge an infant hat by where it sits rather than whether it fits around. A knit stretches in circumference and not in length, so a small band can fit the head and still leave the ears uncovered.
Safety Rules
These are not preferences. On newborn and infant sizes we hold to all of them.

- Stitched decoration only. No applied patches, since anything with an edge can lift.
- Nothing detachable. No snap-on poms, buttons, beads or pins.
- No ties on the smallest sizes. Where one exists it must be short with a breakaway release.
- Open, light designs. A dense embroidered area creates a stiff patch against a newborn's head.
- Soft interior seams. The most common comfort problem and invisible in a photograph.
We do not run applied patches, hardware or detachable poms on newborn or infant sizes regardless of the design. Stitched embroidery is the only decoration method we use on these blanks.
- Buying newborn size as a gift. Often outgrown before it is used.
- Woven caps at this age. Head shape varies and knit conforms.
- Dense embroidery. It creates a stiff area against the head.
- Judging fit by circumference alone. Crown depth decides ear coverage.
Fabrics
- Combed cotton. The standard. Soft, breathable and it survives the frequent washing these hats get.
- Cotton-bamboo blends. Softer again with good moisture handling. Common on premium gift lines.
- Fine merino. Warm without itch and naturally temperature regulating. Premium, and less tolerant of hot washing.
What to avoid. Coarse acrylic, which is scratchy against newborn skin, and any chunky or heavily textured knit, which is both too heavy and too uneven for a small stitched design.

Seasonal Timing for Gifts
Infant gift sizing has a timing dimension that adult sizing does not, and it changes the order.
A hat bought at a shower will be worn weeks or months later, and if it is seasonal the gap matters twice. A warm knit for a baby due in April will not be needed until the following winter, by which time a newborn or 0–3 month size is long outgrown.
The rule that works. For anything season-specific, size to the season rather than to the birth. Work out roughly how old the baby will be when the hat is actually needed, then order for that age.
Two examples. A sun hat for a baby due in October should be 6–12 months, since it will be worn the following summer. A winter knit for a baby due in March should be 6–12 months for the same reason.
For non-seasonal pieces — an everyday cotton knit, a personalized keepsake — 0–3 months remains the safe default.
Personalization
A first name is the most requested decoration in this band and it works better than a logo does.
The panel is very small, so an adult-scale mark reduced to fit reads as a smudge. A single short word in a clean face at a generous stroke weight reads clearly and looks deliberate.
Keep it to one element. A name, or a small motif, but rarely both — there is not room for two things to read at this size.
With no minimum order, a single personalized newborn hat is a real order, which is why this band sees more one-off pieces than any other.

What We Tell Customers Who Ask
Infant blanks and small stitched designs both cost less than adult work. A personalized newborn hat is among the least expensive custom pieces we produce.
Wash before first wear and expect frequent laundering. Combed cotton handles repeated washing better than merino, which matters for a hat that gets genuine use.
Check the interior seam finish on any infant blank. A raw or bulky seam against the head is the most common comfort problem and it does not show in a product photograph.
For a gift we would run a soft combed cotton knit in 0-3 months with a single stitched first name and no hardware. For a hospital program, plain newborn hats with branded pieces in the larger sizes.
We size gifts a band up as standard and tell you why, because a hat that fits on the day it is given has a very short life. Free digital proof, free artwork setup on twelve or more, no minimums.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size hat does a newborn wear?
About 13 to 14 inches of head circumference, or 33 to 36 centimeters. Preemie sizes run smaller at 11 to 13 inches, and micro preemie smaller again.
How long does a newborn hat fit?
About six weeks. Head circumference grows roughly two inches in the first three months, which is the fastest growth of any period in life.
What size should I buy as a baby shower gift?
0 to 3 months rather than newborn. It fits from about six weeks and gets worn for a season, where a newborn hat is often outgrown before it is used.
Why do newborns wear hats in hospital?
A newborn's head is large relative to their body and a significant route of heat loss, and newborns regulate temperature less effectively than older babies. A hat helps maintain body temperature in the first hours and days.
Should I choose knit or woven for a newborn?
Knit. Newborn head shape varies with molding from birth, and a stretchy knit conforms to whatever shape is there where a structured cap assumes one that may not exist yet.
Can newborn hats have poms or patches?
No. We run stitched embroidery only on newborn and infant sizes — no applied patches, no hardware and nothing detachable, regardless of the design.
Is there a minimum order?
No. One hat is a real order, which is why single personalized newborn pieces are common.
