The practical implication for gifts. Sizing up one band is usually the right call. A newborn hat fits for weeks; an 0–3M fits for months. For hospital and welcome-gift programs, newborn is correct; for anything given at a shower, 3–6M gets more use.

Decoration Safety
This is the part that differs from every other category, and it is not negotiable.
- Stitched embroidery only. Thread stitched directly into the fabric cannot detach. This is the only decoration method we use on infant headwear.
- No applied patches. Heat-applied and sewn-on patches both introduce an edge that can lift, and anything that can lift can come off.
- No hardware. No snaps, buttons, grommets, pins, beads or attached poms on infant sizes. Detachable poms in particular are a good feature on adult hats and the wrong feature here.
- No loose ties or long cords. Chin ties on baby hats should be short and securely stitched, or absent.
Keep designs small and open. A dense fill on a soft knit stiffens the area, which is uncomfortable against a baby's head. A name, a small icon or a short wordmark is the right scale.
Nothing applied, attached or removable belongs on an infant hat. Stitched embroidery is the only decoration method we will run on these sizes.
Why Head Size Charts Matter More for Babies
Infant head circumference is the fastest-changing measurement in the body, and that makes baby hat sizing behave unlike any other category.
A newborn's head grows roughly two inches in the first three months, then slows sharply. In practical terms a newborn hat fits for about six weeks, a 0–3 month size for about three, and by six months the growth rate has fallen enough that a size lasts several months.
Two consequences for ordering. Gift purchases should size up a band, since a hat that fits on the day of a shower fits for a fortnight. And hospital and welcome programs should stock the smaller sizes deliberately, because those are the ones with the shortest useful life and the highest turnover.
The other variable is head shape rather than size. Newborn heads are not uniformly round, so a knit hat with genuine stretch fits considerably more babies comfortably than a woven cap in the same nominal size does.
Materials
- Combed cotton. The standard. Soft, breathable, washes repeatedly without issue.
- Cotton-bamboo blends. Softer again, with good moisture handling. Popular on premium gift lines.
- Fine merino. Warm without being itchy, and naturally temperature regulating. Costs more and needs gentle washing.
- Organic cotton. Common on gift and retail lines where the certification matters to the buyer.
What to avoid. Coarse acrylic, which is scratchy against infant skin, and anything with a rough interior seam. Seam finish matters more here than on any adult hat, since a baby cannot tell you it is uncomfortable.
Check the interior seams on any infant blank. A raw or bulky seam sitting against the head is the most common comfort problem, and it is invisible in a product photo.
Sun Hats for Babies
A separate category with different priorities. Infant skin burns quickly, and a knit cap offers no sun protection at all.
For sun, look for a brim of at least two and a half inches, ideally with a neck flap, in a tightly woven lightweight fabric. A chin tie is genuinely useful here since babies remove hats constantly, and on sun styles it should be short with a breakaway feature. Baby sun hats sized for infants generally come in month bands like knit caps, with an internal drawcord on larger sizes. For an outdoor program covering families, offering both a knit and a sun style is worth the small extra setup.

Knit vs Woven Baby Hats
Two constructions, and they suit different purposes rather than competing.
Knit caps stretch, which makes sizing forgiving and means one size covers a wider band of head circumferences. They are the standard for newborn and hospital use, they are warm, and they hold their shape through frequent washing. The limitation is sun: knit offers no meaningful UV protection.
Woven caps — lightweight cotton bucket styles, brimmed sun hats and soft-crown caps — do not stretch, so sizing has to be closer. They shade properly, breathe well in heat, and suit outdoor use from a few months old.
For a gift or retail program covering the first year, offering one of each is a reasonable spread. Knit handles the first months and cooler weather; a brimmed woven style handles outdoor time from roughly three months onward. Both take the same stitched decoration, so the artwork setup is shared.
