Custom Baby Hats: Sizing, Safety and Soft Materials

Baby hats have one rule that overrides everything else: nothing on the hat should be able to come off. We build every infant order around that.

Custom baby hats are soft knit or lightweight cotton hats for infants, sized by head circumference in months, decorated with securely stitched embroidery rather than anything applied or attached. Sizing moves fast in the first year, materials need to be soft and breathable, and the decoration rules are stricter than on any other headwear. Get those three right and the rest is straightforward.

Quick answer & key facts
  • Sizing runs by month, not by age band. Head circumference changes fast to 12 months.
  • Stitched decoration only. Nothing applied, attached or removable.
  • Soft, breathable fabrics. Combed cotton, cotton-bamboo, fine merino.
  • Made in the USA, no minimums. One hat is a real order.

Baby Hat Sizes by Month

Age Head circumference (inches) Head circumference (cm) Size label
Preemie 11–13 28–33 Preemie
Newborn 13–14 33–36 Newborn
0–3 months 14–16 36–41 0–3M
3–6 months 16–17 41–43 3–6M
6–12 months 17–18.5 43–47 6–12M
12–24 months 18.5–19.5 47–50 Toddler

The first twelve months cover almost as much growth as the following decade.

For anything above two years, our guide to kids custom hats and the wider custom hats for kids range covers the sizing that follows.

The practical implication for gifts. Sizing up one band is usually the right call. A newborn hat fits for weeks; an 0–3M fits for months. For hospital and welcome-gift programs, newborn is correct; for anything given at a shower, 3–6M gets more use.

Sizing note

Order one size up for gifts. Babies outgrow a newborn hat in weeks, and a 3-6M size gets worn for a season instead.

Decoration Safety

This is the part that differs from every other category, and it is not negotiable.

  • Stitched embroidery only. Thread stitched directly into the fabric cannot detach. This is the only decoration method we use on infant headwear.
  • No applied patches. Heat-applied and sewn-on patches both introduce an edge that can lift, and anything that can lift can come off.
  • No hardware. No snaps, buttons, grommets, pins, beads or attached poms on infant sizes. Detachable poms in particular are a good feature on adult hats and the wrong feature here.
  • No loose ties or long cords. Chin ties on baby hats should be short and securely stitched, or absent.

Keep designs small and open. A dense fill on a soft knit stiffens the area, which is uncomfortable against a baby's head. A name, a small icon or a short wordmark is the right scale.

Watch out

Nothing applied, attached or removable belongs on an infant hat. Stitched embroidery is the only decoration method we will run on these sizes.

Why Head Size Charts Matter More for Babies

Infant head circumference is the fastest-changing measurement in the body, and that makes baby hat sizing behave unlike any other category.

A newborn's head grows roughly two inches in the first three months, then slows sharply. In practical terms a newborn hat fits for about six weeks, a 0–3 month size for about three, and by six months the growth rate has fallen enough that a size lasts several months.

Two consequences for ordering. Gift purchases should size up a band, since a hat that fits on the day of a shower fits for a fortnight. And hospital and welcome programs should stock the smaller sizes deliberately, because those are the ones with the shortest useful life and the highest turnover.

The other variable is head shape rather than size. Newborn heads are not uniformly round, so a knit hat with genuine stretch fits considerably more babies comfortably than a woven cap in the same nominal size does.

Materials

  • Combed cotton. The standard. Soft, breathable, washes repeatedly without issue.
  • Cotton-bamboo blends. Softer again, with good moisture handling. Popular on premium gift lines.
  • Fine merino. Warm without being itchy, and naturally temperature regulating. Costs more and needs gentle washing.
  • Organic cotton. Common on gift and retail lines where the certification matters to the buyer.

What to avoid. Coarse acrylic, which is scratchy against infant skin, and anything with a rough interior seam. Seam finish matters more here than on any adult hat, since a baby cannot tell you it is uncomfortable.

Fabric tip

Check the interior seams on any infant blank. A raw or bulky seam sitting against the head is the most common comfort problem, and it is invisible in a product photo.

Sun Hats for Babies

A separate category with different priorities. Infant skin burns quickly, and a knit cap offers no sun protection at all.

For sun, look for a brim of at least two and a half inches, ideally with a neck flap, in a tightly woven lightweight fabric. A chin tie is genuinely useful here since babies remove hats constantly, and on sun styles it should be short with a breakaway feature. Our guides to custom boonie hats and custom safari hats cover the adult equivalents of the same coverage logic.

Baby sun hats sized for infants generally come in month bands like knit caps, with an internal drawcord on larger sizes. For an outdoor program covering families, offering both a knit and a sun style is worth the small extra setup.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • Applied patches on infant sizes. Anything with an edge can lift. Stitched only.
  • Dense embroidered logos. A stiff patch of stitching is uncomfortable against a baby's head.
  • Ordering newborn sizes for shower gifts. They fit for weeks. Size up.
  • Knit caps for sun exposure. Knit offers no UV protection. A brimmed style is the answer.

Knit vs Woven Baby Hats

Two constructions, and they suit different purposes rather than competing.

Knit caps stretch, which makes sizing forgiving and means one size covers a wider band of head circumferences. They are the standard for newborn and hospital use, they are warm, and they hold their shape through frequent washing. The limitation is sun: knit offers no meaningful UV protection.

Woven caps — lightweight cotton bucket styles, brimmed sun hats and soft-crown caps — do not stretch, so sizing has to be closer. They shade properly, breathe well in heat, and suit outdoor use from a few months old.

For a gift or retail program covering the first year, offering one of each is a reasonable spread. Knit handles the first months and cooler weather; a brimmed woven style handles outdoor time from roughly three months onward. Both take the same stitched decoration, so the artwork setup is shared.

Who Orders Them

Hospitals and birthing centers for welcome gifts. Pediatric practices and midwifery groups. Baby and maternity retail brands. Family-oriented businesses running gift lines. Photographers offering branded newborn sessions. And parents ordering personalized names, which is where custom baby hats for girls and boys' equivalents come in as single-piece orders.

The no-minimum policy matters more in this category than most. A single personalized hat with a name on it is a real order, and it is one of the more common single-piece requests we handle.

What We Tell Customers Who Ask

Buying tip

For gift programs, order one size up and choose a stitched name or short wordmark over a logo. Personalization is what makes a baby hat get kept rather than passed on.

Cost-saving tip

Infant blanks cost less than adult hats simply from material, and small stitched designs cost less to run. A personalized baby hat is one of the least expensive custom pieces we produce.

Wearing tip

Wash before first wear and wash often. Baby hats get laundered more than any other headwear, so specify a fabric that tolerates it — combed cotton handles repeated washing better than merino.

Our recommendation

For a hospital or gift program we would run a soft combed cotton knit in 0-3M, with a small stitched name or a short wordmark and no hardware of any kind. Add a brimmed sun style in the same fabric family if the program covers outdoor use.

The Speedy Pros Hats difference

We do not run applied patches, hardware or heat transfers on infant sizes, regardless of what a design calls for. Free digital proof before production, free artwork setup on twelve or more, and no minimums, so a single named hat is a real order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size hat does a newborn wear?

Around 13 to 14 inches of head circumference, or 33 to 36 cm. Preemie sizes run smaller at 11 to 13 inches, and 0 to 3 months covers 14 to 16 inches.

What size baby hat should I order as a gift?

One size up from the baby's current age. Newborn hats fit for weeks; a 3 to 6 month size gets worn for a season instead.

Can baby hats have patches?

We do not use applied patches on infant sizes. Anything with an edge can lift, so stitched embroidery is the only decoration method we run on baby hats.

What is the best fabric for a baby hat?

Combed cotton for everyday use and repeated washing, cotton-bamboo blends for extra softness, and fine merino for warmth without itch. Avoid coarse acrylic against infant skin.

Do baby hats protect from the sun?

Knit caps do not. For sun protection choose a brimmed style with at least two and a half inches of brim, ideally with a neck flap, in a tightly woven lightweight fabric.

Can you put a baby's name on a hat?

Yes, and personalized names are one of the most common infant orders. Keep the design small and open so the stitching stays soft against the head.

Is there a minimum order for custom baby hats?

No. One hat is a real order, which matters in this category since single personalized pieces are common.
