Brim width and underbrim color are the two specs that change how the hat performs.
The dark underbrim is the most underrated line on that list. Light bounces up off water, sand and pavement straight into the underside of the brim, and a dark panel absorbs it where a light one reflects it into the eyes.
Cotton canvas looks the part and holds sweat. For Florida programs, poly-cotton with a mesh crown vent is the combination that actually gets worn through August.
Decorating a Safari Hat
- Crown side. The placement. A small embroidered mark on the side of the crown, above the band, sits on a stable structured area and reads from the side and in photographs.
- Crown band. Takes a woven label or a small patch well, and suits the style. Keep it modest.
- Brim. Not a placement. It curves in two directions and flexes, so stitched artwork distorts and puckers. This is the most common surprise on safari hat orders.

Safari Hats and the Puggaree
The band around the crown of a traditional safari hat is called a puggaree, and it is more than decoration.
Originally a length of cloth wrapped around the crown, it served two purposes: extra insulation against direct sun on the top of the head, and a surface that could be soaked in water for evaporative cooling. Modern versions are usually a fixed fabric band, sometimes pleated, and the cooling function has largely been lost.
What it still offers is a decoration surface. A puggaree band gives a flat, stable area for a woven label or a small patch that the crown itself — curved in two directions — does not provide as cleanly.
Two things worth checking on a blank. Whether the band is stitched down along its full length or only tacked, since a loose band lifts and looks untidy. And whether it is a genuine separate band or a printed suggestion of one, which some cheaper hats use and which offers no decoration surface at all.
Sizing
Most safari hats come in S/M and L/XL bands, sometimes with an internal drawcord. The structured crown gives less than a soft hat, so the size band matters more here than on a boonie. A chin cord absorbs some fit variation by holding the hat in place, but it does not rescue a crown that is genuinely too small.

Crown Vents and Airflow
A structured crown traps more heat than a soft one, which is the price of the shape holding up. Ventilation is therefore a more important specification on a safari hat than on a boonie, and blanks vary considerably.
- Mesh crown insert. A band of open mesh around the upper crown. The most effective option and worth specifying for Florida.
- Metal or stitched eyelets. Small vents at the crown seams. Better than nothing, considerably less than mesh.
- Perforated panel section. Laser-cut vents that look solid at distance. A middle option that keeps a clean appearance.
- No ventilation. Common on fashion and retail blanks. A poor choice for a working team.
Metal grommets are common on safari and outdoor blanks, and they suit the look. The caution is salt: plated hardware corrodes in coastal air and stains the fabric around it. For marine programs, specify stitched vents or solid brass rather than accepting whatever the blank ships with.
Colors
Khaki, olive, stone and coyote dominate, and they should — the palette is part of the category's identity. Mid-tones hide dirt and read correctly for outdoor work. Black absorbs heat and is a poor choice for a sun hat regardless of how it looks.
