Curve Depth
More variation exists than the category name suggests, and it changes both the look and the coverage.
- Shallow. A slight arc. Reads current and modern, photographs cleanly, shades less.
- Medium. The standard and the safe default. Neutral to everyone.
- Deep. A pronounced bend that shades the sides of the face. Standard on fishing and outdoor styles.
Deep curves cast a shadow straight across the front panel in overhead light, which can swallow a logo in photographs. If your brand photographs its hats, a shallow-to-medium curve reads cleanest on camera.
Match curve depth to the job. Deep for people squinting into sun on water; shallow for anything that will be photographed for a website.
Curved, Flat and Wide Brim

For a program covering people who work outdoors for hours, splitting between curved caps and a small number of wide-brim hats is usually the right answer. The caps cover general wear and the wide brims cover the people genuinely exposed all day.
Decorating a Curved Brim Cap
The front panel is the placement, and how much room you have depends on the crown rather than the brim. A structured high-profile front gives roughly two and a quarter to two and a half inches of usable height; an unstructured low-profile dad hat gives closer to one and three-quarters.
The brim itself is a poor decoration surface. An embroidery hoop needs a flat area, and the arc puts the fabric under tension across its width, so anything spanning the full brim distorts toward the ends. Short marks near one edge work; long wordmarks do not.
Better secondary spots. The side panels, the closure area and the undervisor. The undervisor in particular is flatter than the brim top and easier to stitch, and a mark there is a detail the wearer sees daily.
Brim decoration on a curved cap distorts across the width. If a design has to be exact, put it on the front panel and keep the brim for something short at one edge.

- Deep curves for product photography. The shadow falls across the logo.
- Full-width brim wordmarks. They distort at the ends on any real curve.
- Crushing a curved cap flat. The crease across the brim sets and does not come out.
Structure and Crown Height
Brim shape is only half of the silhouette. The other half is what sits behind it, and the two decisions interact more than most orders account for.
A curved brim on a high structured crown reads classic and sporting — the standard baseball cap shape. The same curve on a low unstructured crown reads casual and relaxed, which is the dad hat. Neither is better; they signal different things to the same person.
Crown height also decides logo room. A structured high-profile front gives roughly two and a quarter to two and a half inches of usable height, while a soft low-profile dad hat gives closer to one and three-quarters. If your artwork is fixed and cannot be redrawn, check crown profile before anything else — the brim shape will not change what fits, but the crown will.

Care
- Keep it out of the dryer and off hot dashboards. Heat warps the visor board permanently.
- Store on the crown, not folded. A crease across the brim is the most common damage we see.
- To deepen a relaxed curve, hold it with a rubber band around the crown overnight rather than forcing it.
- Spot clean the brim with cool water and a soft brush; soaking a visor board softens it.
