Two Constraints, Compounding
The soft crown. There is no buckram behind an unstructured front panel, so the fabric moves under a needle. Dense fills pull it permanently out of shape.

Natural is the practical choice for anything actually worn. Optic white is a photography color.
Natural deserves the recommendation. It keeps nearly all the thread contrast, reads warmer and more considered, and hides sunscreen and handling marks far better than optic white. Thread on White
Every dark color reads, which makes the contrast side easy. Navy is the most versatile, black the boldest, forest and burgundy the most traditional.
Two specific notes for this configuration. Because the logo has to be small on a soft crown, contrast matters more than it would on a large mark — stick to genuinely dark threads rather than mid-tones. And tonal white-on-white, which is a real look on a structured cap, is a poor choice here, because the shadow from any puckering competes with the shadow from the stitching and the whole thing reads as a flaw.
Upkeep
- Spot clean with cool water, a soft brush and mild detergent, from outside the mark inward.
- Do not soak. Even without buckram, soaking sets the sweatband line and can leave a tidemark.
- Never machine dry. Heat sets stains permanently.
- Air dry on something round, out of direct sun.
- Treat the sweatband line early — on white it is the first thing to show and the fastest to spread.

Underlay on Light Fabrics
Embroidery on a white soft crown needs an underlay layer, and it is worth understanding what it does since it is invisible in the finished hat.
Underlay is a sparse layer of stitching laid down before the visible design. It does two things: it stabilises the fabric so the top stitching does not distort it, and it lifts the thread slightly so the design sits above the surface rather than sinking into it.
On white specifically there is a third function. Underlay keeps the top stitches dense enough that the white fabric does not show through gaps in the thread, which on a light ground under a dark design reads as a speckled, unfinished mark.
The trade is that underlay adds stitches, and stitches are what pucker an unbacked crown. - Woven or leather patches. Worth serious consideration on this configuration. A sewn patch puts the detail on a stable surface of its own and only the perimeter stitching touches the soft crown, which sidesteps the puckering problem entirely.
What to avoid. Large solid fills, tightly kerned lettering, dense multi-color artwork and 3D puff, which needs a structured panel to sit against.
