On a soft crown, heather has a second advantage: it hides stitching puckering too.
That second point is worth naming. An unstructured panel has no backing, so dense stitching pulls the fabric and creates small shadows. On a flat solid those shadows read clearly. On a heather they blend into variation that is already there, which gives you slightly more latitude on stitch density than a solid would.
It is latitude, not permission — the design still needs to stay open. But if your artwork is borderline for a soft crown, heather is the more forgiving ground.

Gray sits mid-value, so there is no default contrast direction. Two rules cover it.
