UPF measures how much ultraviolet radiation a fabric blocks; it says nothing about how much of your head and neck that fabric actually covers. A UPF 50+ baseball cap leaves the ears and neck fully exposed. A plain wide-brim hat with no rating at all shades them. For genuine sun protection, coverage is the specification that matters and UPF is the supporting detail.

What UPF Actually Measures
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and it applies to fabric. A UPF 50 rating means the fabric allows roughly one fiftieth of ultraviolet radiation through — about two percent.
Ratings are grouped: UPF 15 to 24 is rated good, 25 to 39 very good, and 40 to 50+ excellent. Fifty-plus is the highest category and covers everything above it.

What determines it. Weave tightness, fabric weight, color depth, fiber type and any UV-absorbing treatment. A tightly woven dark polyester rates highly without any treatment at all; a loose light cotton rates poorly.

Brim width does more than any fabric rating. Three inches is where real coverage begins.

The practical hierarchy is straightforward: Choose the coverage first, then choose a well-rated fabric within that style. Choosing a highly rated fabric in a style that covers little is the wrong order.
Specify the brim width before the UPF rating. A three-inch brim in unrated fabric protects more skin than a UPF 50+ cap does.
What Raises a Fabric's Rating
- Tight weave. Less space between threads means less UV passes through. The single biggest factor.
- Weight. More fiber per square inch blocks more.
- Color depth. Darker colors absorb more UV. A dark fabric can rate considerably higher than the same fabric in white.
- Fiber type. Polyester blocks UV better than cotton at equivalent weights.
- Treatment. UV-absorbing finishes raise the rating and can wash out over time.
Two of those interact awkwardly with comfort. Darker and heavier fabrics rate better and run hotter, which in Florida is a real trade. A light-colored vented hat that gets worn all day protects more skin than a dark unvented one that comes off by mid-morning.
Dark heavy fabrics rate highest and wear hottest. The hat that actually gets worn protects more than the one that rates better and gets taken off.
Reflected UV
The consideration the rating ignores entirely.
Ultraviolet radiation reflects off surfaces — water, sand, concrete and snow all bounce a meaningful proportion upward. That reflected UV reaches the face and the underside of the chin from below, where no brim blocks it.

Two responses. A dark underbrim absorbs reflected light rather than bouncing it into the face, which is why sun-oriented hats specify one. And a wider brim intercepts more of the reflected path.

- Treating UPF as a coverage rating. It rates fabric only.
- A light underbrim on a sun hat. Reflected UV goes straight into the face.

- Assuming treatments last. UV finishes wash out; tight weave and dark color do not.
Sun Exposure Is Cumulative
The reason coverage matters more than the rating comes down to how exposure accumulates, and it is worth stating plainly for a crew program.
Outdoor workers accumulate ultraviolet exposure across every working day for years. The damage is not from any single day but from the total, which means the areas consistently left uncovered take the largest share over a career.
For anyone wearing a baseball cap outdoors daily, those areas are the ears and the back of the neck — and they are exactly the sites where outdoor occupational skin damage most commonly appears. A cap protects the scalp thoroughly and leaves the two highest-risk areas open every day for years.

That is the argument for full-brim hats on crew programs, and it is a stronger one than comfort or appearance. It is also why offering a brimmed option alongside caps — rather than mandating either — tends to work: the people who spend the most time outdoors self-select toward the coverage.

Specifying a Genuine Sun Hat
- Brim of three inches or more, running the full circumference.
- A dark underbrim, particularly near water, sand or pavement.
- Crown ventilation, so the hat is comfortable enough to keep on.
- A tightly woven synthetic shell, which rates well and dries fast.
- A chin cord for anywhere windy, since a hat that blows off protects nothing.
That combination delivers genuine protection and stays wearable, which is the balance most sun-hat programs get wrong in one direction or the other.

What We Tell Customers Who Ask

UV treatments degrade with washing. Ratings that come from tight weave, weight and dark color do not, which makes an untreated tightly woven fabric the more durable choice.
Check the underbrim color before the UPF number. On water and pavement, reflected ultraviolet reaches skin that no brim width protects, and a dark underbrim is the only thing that addresses it.
