How Flock Works

Detail Limits
The pile is the constraint.
Fibers stand upright and splay slightly, so a cut edge softens by a fraction of a millimeter in every direction. On a bold shape that is invisible. On a thin line it closes the gaps.
Three practical rules. Keep stroke widths above roughly 3mm, since narrower elements lose definition. Avoid tight internal detail, where two edges close to each other merge as the pile splays. And favor solid shapes over outlines, since an outline is a thin element by definition.
Where fine detail is needed alongside a flocked element, stitching over or beside it handles what the flock cannot.

How Flock Wears

Three things accelerate it.
Heat, particularly a dryer, which mats the pile permanently in one cycle.
Abrasion, from bags, seats and hands. And dirt, since a pile surface traps it more readily than a smooth one and cleaning means working against the fibers.
Two habits help substantially. Cold wash, air dry, and brush the pile gently with a soft brush to lift it after washing.
The honest framing is that flock suits retail, event and fashion pieces where the texture is worth a shorter life. For a work uniform expected to last years, embroidery is the more sensible specification.
Colors and Combinations
Flock comes in solid colors with a limited range compared with vinyl or thread — the manufacturing process suits fewer shades.
Because the surface is matte, colors read deeper and slightly darker than the same shade in a shiny material. A red flock looks richer and less bright than red vinyl.
Two combinations work particularly well.

Flock Against Chenille
Both are pile textures and they get confused, so the difference is worth stating.
Flock is very short fibers bonded upright to an adhesive layer. The pile is dense and fine, roughly a millimeter high, and the surface feels like velvet.
Chenille is a yarn-based fabric with a much longer, coarser pile, closer to a towel or a varsity letter. It is sewn on as a patch rather than heat applied.

Flock is heat applied and chenille is sewn, which makes chenille considerably more durable. And flock reads retro sportswear where chenille reads collegiate.

Which Blanks Take It
Flock is heat-applied, so the fabric has to tolerate the press.
- Cotton and cotton blends. The best case. Even surface, good heat tolerance.
- Polyester. Works with lower temperature settings; check the specific blank.
- Structured caps. The flat stable panel gives even pressure under the press.
- Unstructured caps. Workable, and the softer crown makes even pressure harder to achieve.
- Knits. Poor. The surface is uneven and it stretches, which breaks the bond.
- Nylon, waxed cotton, leather. Not suitable, since the heat damages them.
