Who Orders Them

Straw for Florida programs. Felt for anything shipping north or running in winter.
Felt quality is graded by X-count — 4X, 10X, 100X and upward. The scale is not standardized between makers, so it indicates relative quality within a brand rather than across the industry. Higher counts generally mean more fur content, a finer finish and a considerably higher price.
For a Florida program, straw is almost always the right call. Felt in humid heat is uncomfortable and it is the wrong seasonal signal for most of the year.
Crown and Brim Shapes
Shape carries more identity than color on a western hat, and the vocabulary is worth knowing when specifying an order.
Crown creases. Cattleman is the classic three-crease shape and the safest default. Gus has a sloped front. Pinch front narrows at the top and reads more modern. Open crown ships uncreased for the wearer to shape.
Brim shapes. Flat brims read traditional and dressy. Cattleman roll curves up at the sides. Taco or pinch brims curl sharply and read modern western. Brim widths generally run three to four and a half inches.
For a group order, cattleman crown with a moderate roll is the shape that suits the widest range of people and the widest range of occasions.
How to Brand a Cowboy Hat
Four methods, in order of how often we use them.
- Branded hat band. A leather, ribbon or woven band around the crown carrying your logo, stamped or printed. The most visible option, works on felt and straw equally, and it reads as part of the hat rather than added to it.
- Leather patch. Sewn or riveted to the crown side or the band. Gives a flat, stable surface on an unstable material and pairs naturally with western styling.
- Hat pin or concho. Attached to the band. Traditional, removable, and effective for event and gift programs.
- Stamping or burning. Pressing or burning a mark directly into felt or a leather band. Specialist, permanent, and the most premium-looking option.
What does not work. Direct embroidery on felt, which crushes the nap and leaves a permanent flattened halo; embroidery on straw, which sinks between the fibers or tears them; and heat transfers on either. - Ordering fitted sizes without measuring. Western hats use exact hat sizes with no adjustment.
Sizing
Cowboy hats use fitted hat sizes — 6 3/4 through 8 — rather than adjustable bands, so an accurate measurement matters. There is no strap to compensate, and a wrong size is a wasted hat.
Some include an internal sizing tape or foam shims that take up a fraction of a size, which helps at the margins. For a group order, either collect measurements or choose a straw style with an adjustable internal drawcord, which several manufacturers offer.

Reading Felt Quality
Felt hats are graded by an X rating and buyers reasonably assume it means something standard. It does not.
The scale — 4X, 10X, 100X and upward — originally referred to fur content, with more X marks meaning more beaver or rabbit fur relative to wool. It has never been standardized across manufacturers, and there is no independent body verifying it.
In practice the rating indicates relative quality within one maker's range and nothing across makers. A 10X from a premium manufacturer can outperform a 100X from a budget one, and both descriptions are legitimate.
What to ask instead. What the felt is actually made from. Wool felt, wool blend and fur felt are meaningfully different materials with a large price gap between them, and they feel entirely different in the hand even when they photograph identically.
For a branded program that mostly matters at the low end, where a wool felt sold with a high X rating can disappoint a buyer expecting something closer to fur felt.
Care
- Handle by the brim, not the crown. Repeated crown handling breaks down the crease.
- Store upside down on the crown or on a hat stand, never brim-down.
- Brush felt with a soft brush in a counter-clockwise direction to lift the nap.
- Never soak straw. Water softens the fibers and it dries out of shape.
- Keep both out of hot cars. Heat dries straw brittle and can warp a felt crown.

Straw sits well below felt, and felt price climbs sharply with fur content. For a gift or event program, a good straw hat with a branded leather band looks considerably better than a cheap felt one.
Steam reshapes felt if a crown or brim gets knocked out of line. It does nothing for straw, which is why straw shape should be right when it ships.
Ask what the felt actually is. Wool felt, wool blend and fur felt look similar in a photograph and feel completely different in the hand, and the price gap between them is large.
